July 15 - Part 1: Alhambra, Spain

Okay... this was another favorite day! I LOVED Alhambra - which were the palace gardens and homes/palaces of the royalty starting in the Mooring era. The architecture was fantastic and the gardens were so beautiful. I took the most pictures this day. Granada and Alhambra were such cool places. I could have spent another day exploring here!

Sooo... here are all my Alhambra pictures. Actually - this is really paired down ;-)

view from the gardens on Granada below

Inside the garden walls

garden courtyard into the palace. The detailed tile work was so fantastic - all the way up AND on the ceiling, too

The stone work on the streets - all through Granada!

I loved the eagle heads holding the rings on the outside of the palace walls

City of Alhambra

Oldest remnant of the old palace and the view - you can see where we took the pictures of Alhambra last night across the way

upclose with the tile work

lion fountain in the middle of the palace

this is the ceiling in the palace. it is encrusted with tiny painted enclaves/alcoves

Huge door within a door with beautiful wood working (I got a little carried away with all the doors on my trip - those are all posted on my Pinterest page if you are interested)

Napoleon Dynamite pondering in the garden courtyard of the palace

Palace outside doors

detail of the arches inside the palace

Lots of little water grottos and fountains  - which were a sign of power and wealth in the desert

Little door out in the gardens at then end of the pathway

Our group along the way and some of the stone work in the gardens

garden walkways

Cool walkway grown with oleanders

Roman ruins being excavated underneath the palace

Artisan making the intricate boxes inlayed with stone, shell, wood and metal

colored cement tiles on the floor of a tea house

the pomegranate (granada) was the theme for the tiles, sidewalks and city and were growing along the streets in Alhambra

more tile work details - just couldn't get enough of it!

Mom and Dad in the palace courtyard

more little painted enclaves

loved the wordworking on the framing around this door

hall way in the palace courtyard - there is a little fountain on the ground in the center that fills the other fountains connected to it

couldn't resist! Could be really good for my math class on tessellations and translations...
